I followed the steps in Dotnetnuke installation guide to upgrade. I did not have any MachineValidation or MachineDecryption keys settings in old web.config so i skipped that. Maybe is not for the Community Edition? I upgraded from 5.0.0.to 5.0.1. Everything went as it should, until I was to go to homepage after the upgrade. I did not choose anything Ajax when i installed the previous 5.0.0. so I dont know about that one. I used 5.0.1 upgrade package. This error came up:

An error has occurred.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.UI.Utilities.MSAJAX.get_IsInstalled() at DotNetNuke.UI.Utilities.MSAJAX.RegisterStartupScript(Page objPage, String Key, String Script) at DotNetNuke.UI.Utilities.ClientAPI.RegisterStartUpScript(Page objPage, String key, String script) at DotNetNuke.Framework.DefaultPage.InitializePage() at DotNetNuke.Framework.DefaultPage.Page_Init(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Page.OnInit(EventArgs e) at DotNetNuke.Framework.PageBase.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Try installing AJAX extensions for .NET 2.0 on your machine and see if this works - see here and the gemini issue posted on this thread:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/-1/threadid/291517/scope/posts/Default.aspx

It could also be an extra dll in place (again see thread).

I had the very same problem. To fix it I had to change the framework from 3.5 to 2.0, and then change it back from 2.0 to 3.5. That seems to work everytime.

Found the crux of the problem after comparing the before and after versions of my web.config file. (Had to move things back into their original locations to be able to compare)

This was in my web.config before, and if I add it back gives the same error:

Under <;runtime><assemblyBinding> nodes:

<dependentAssembly xmlns="">

The modification made that fixed the problem was to remove the xmlns attribute:

<dependentAssembly>

Now I know how to fix the problem without having to change the Framework version back to 2.0 and then back up to 3.5, which was putting in that change to my web.config for me. Maybe it will help someone else too.

Thanks,
Karin

Thanks for all suggestions. Unfortunately I am not able to investigate more. After following the links in Alex`s post I found that there is an issue with Ajax so I decided to restore from backup and try to upgrade again after installing ASP ajax extensions for 2.0. A new less informative error "An error has occured" came up after "successfull" upgrade this time. I could not find any errors in the event logs or IIS error logs. That made me think I have done something else wrong (Just starting out with dotnetnuke) so I decided to start from scratch and install 5.0.1 from the starter kit template in visual web developer express. After installing and running locally on my development machine (WinXP SP3) I added alias for the url to the website i plan to use for dotnetnuke on my w2k3 SP2 IIS webserver and uploaded it and ran it with success.
