Your guide is a good, clean summary of the DNN install. I actually attempted the install 3x yesterday, each time deleting the database and virtual directory folder, and starting from scratch. I even re-downloaded the install zip.  It's bizarre to me that the scripts create the tables in the database, and populate certain tables, but the Portals and PortalsAlias tables are empty.

I'll try hunting around for the code that populates these fields and try to execute it manually to see where it is failing.

DKKramer,

I noticed that you made extra changes to the web.config file.  That could be the problem.  Get a copy of the original web.config file unchanged and just change whats in the guide.  Comment out or delete the SQL express stuff, un-comment the SQL2000 stuff, and add your username and password to the two lines that need them.  Thats all you should change in that file.

  • Modified release.config file:
    • Removed SQLExpress connection keys
    • Modifed SiteSqlServer connection keys to connect to database (MSSQL2K)
    • Changed minRequiredPasswordLength="6"
    • Set objectQualifier = "cms_"
    • Saved file as web.config
    good luck

    OK, problem SOLVED!

I kept all things equal as outlined above, but changed the minRequiredPasswordLength back to "4" and the Portal installed correctly.  Perhaps the script uses the admin or host login when generating the default portal?

Thanks to mehenson for putting my mindset back in the right direction.

You will be happy to know that in the DNN 4.1 release that should be out in about 4 weeks or so, they made the following modification to "password length".

    - Password Length - increase the default minimum password length from 4 characters ( will require a more secure host password on initial install )

More info on the next release of DNN 4.1 can be found at the following link.

So, it looks like your mod would have worked if you were starting this install in about a month. lol.
