I want to significantly chage/extend the functionality of the 'DesktopModules/Admin/Tabs/ManageTabs.ascx' control in DNN 5.0. This is a core CMS control that manages tab naming, tab permissions, etc., and it's loaded when the 'Settings' icon is clicked in the top iconbar.

I can create my own module and ingest it into the CMS, but what is the best way to make this the default control that is called when the 'Settings' icon is clicked in the top iconbar?

Thx.

You can change the entry in the ModuleControls table for the ControlKey "Tab."

The SQL would look like this:

UPDATE {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}ModuleControls
SET ControlSrc = 'DesktopModules/YourControlFolder/YourControl.ascx'
WHERE ControlKey = 'Tab'
 AND ModuleDefId IS NULL

Hope that helps,

Hi Brian, thanks for the suggestion. I was considering hacking the value in the ModulControls table but I felt doing so would compromise the future upgrade path. Do you think that would be unlikely?

I think that would be fairly unlikely.  The database schema, in general, is more resistant to change that the application code.

Hope that helps,

please be aware, that the database is not an official API and can change without notification, while we are trying to keep the business layer API backward compatible.
