Hello,

I would like to run a local instance of DNN so that I can play with different skins without the possibility of messing things up on my live site.

I had an IT person try to install DNN locally on my Server 2003 system but he just kept getting errors and finally gave up !

Well, out of curiosity I was looking at other CMSs and found that I could download a machine image (Jumpbox)  of Joomla and run it as a virtual machine.  I was up and running in minutes!  Wow.

Does anyone know if something like this exists for DNN?  Any advice much appreciated.

John

Not too sure what you mean by machine image -

download the install zip for dnn 4.9.3 .  Create a directory in drive c / inetpub called dotnetnuke

unzip the downloaded zip file into this directory

now in iis console - make this dotnetnuke directory a virtual directory and set its permissions so that network service has full permissions. Under Properties make sure the web site is set for asp.net2

check the directlory 'documentation'  shouldbe a readme.txt and a straterkit directory run the welcome.html

ok now when you get this far and need answers post back to this forum.

Do you have mssql server on the w2.3 system

Can you tell us what error messages the It person got when he tried to run the package.

sorry, there is no VM, and there are reasons:

  • licensing: DNN requires XP professional, Vista premium or Windows Server.
  • size - instead of 10 MB this would be dozends time the size, if we need to include SQL server and service packs
  • ease of use - you can easily enable IIS in your local machine and use Microsoft Platform installer 2.0 beta (obtainable from www.microsoft.com/web) to install DotNetNuke and other applications.
