I'm currently working on the navigation for a public portal and have run into an issue. I'm sure many of you have run into this issue before so I thought I would see how some of you may have approached it.

I fear that average users won't understand that you can click on a parent menu item when the child page menu drops down / fly's out. This could lead to  pages and content that is never seen.  I thought about solving this by including a child page that redirects to the parent page but this seems like a hack to me.

I really like the menu that Brandon Haynes is working on but I think it is only for DNN 5.  Any other ideas on how I might solve this issue?

It is always bad practice of usability to add content to menu items with submenues. Unfortunately, there are many sites still using it (including this one, see Products > Professional Edition), but the site owner needs to be aware, that many users don't get to access this page and this is "lost content" or wasted effort.

I don't see a need to redirect to those pages - simply check "locked" in page settings and do not place content on it.

Thanks for the reply Sebastian.

I always thought the "Disable" feature would remove the page from the menu just as the "hidden" option does - now I know different.  I think both methods have they're downsides. With the redirect method if a user does click on both the parent and the redirected child then they see the same page twice. With the disable method some parent menu's work and others (those with child pages) do not. But I think the disable method is the "lessor of two wevils". (pnts to the person who can name the movie that line came from).
