I've created my own petition, complete with typos and grammatical mistakes(it's a feature of mine :)

It's kinda funny. There are a bunch of us who cannot afford the PE edition who are FULLY behind the Corp making money on the PE Edition because we want the Corp to be able to afford to keep the CE edition.

We are more than happy to accept that the CE will be somehow "less" than the PE edition.

So that is why I think there is so much "opposition" to this petition. We know there is no "free lunch". We have to "give up something" to get a free product.

I agree with Michael in this.

Essentially the DNN Corp is packaging a version of CE with some proprietary modules and support and marketing it as PE.

The corp should do whatever it deems necessary to sustain itself. But it's only logical that its users have come to associate open source with free. If DNN corp has made their strategy decision in good faith, then they should not oppose the creation of such petitions. They should take opportunities like this  to communicate better their intentions, which admittedly might be a neverending process :)

Still, for young, naive entrepreneurs looking to hit it big with an innovative idea, $2000 per instance seems a lot of money. Especially now that more and more are trying to stay away from VC's, trying to bootstrap from the beginning. And one of these days one of those are going to succeed and they will have chosen another framework.

I think that those type of entrepreneurs currently can't see much appeal in DNN, whether it be CE or PE. But that could also be part of the corp's strategy of course.

I agree with chinmi - the core needs to sustain itself or we'd all be out of work.

Having said that - I can't justify spending $2000 a year - as a self-employed, one-man band all my eggs are in PokerDIY succeeding and $2000 is just too much money (for now). Obviously the licensing is relying on corporate DNN users who think nothing of spending 2k for security, but for now I am going to have to stick to CE and hope for the best.

Perhaps the licensing needs to cater for corporate and personal users if there are going to be feature differences to make it affordable for all. I was a Silver support for a few years and have always supported DNN in many different ways but a big cash lump sum is just not one of the ways I can help.
