I recently signed up for DNN hosting at PowerDNN.com. According to the advertising on their website, they say they always install the newest version of the software. So after my account was setup, I noticed that they had installed v4.9.4, not v5.1.0. I wrote back, asking them why, and this is the answer they provided:

"Although you are looking to use v5.1.0, please be aware that we do not recommend that our clients upgrade to this version on their live sites. This version is highly unstable as it has many bugs that yet to be worked out. As such we want you to have the lateset stable version of Dot Net Nuke and would like to recommend that you use v4.9.4.

I've gone ahead and have upgraded your site to v5.1.0. Sorry for the trouble, but we're simply just watching after you. If you change your mind and would like v4.9.4 installed I'd be happy to redo the install."

I find this response a little odd? So is DNN v5.1.0 stable enough for production, or not, as PowerDNN.com claims? I don't have enough experience with DNN to know which version I should use.

Thanks

Brad

Hello,

We currently rate it as a stable release (http://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=29122 shows the status of releases). Whilst there are a few known issues none are currently rated as showstoppers (you can always search our bug tracker @ http://support.dotnetnuke.com/Issues.aspx?pi=2&m=1 and set the version number). Individual ISP's/system integrators/dev's etc are completely free to make their own judgements, but with over 12,000 downloads so far I don't notice much in the way of complaints in the forums (forums.dotnetnuke.com) and most of those are upgrade scenarios. In real terms 5.1.0 fixes many issues that existed in 4.9.4, as well as adding many enhancements.

Note: you can see the changelog and see what was done for 5.1.0 @ http://support.dotnetnuke.com/project/ChangeLog.aspx?PROJID=2 and see what's coming up in new versions @ http://support.dotnetnuke.com/project/RoadMap.aspx?PROJID=2

Brad-

Cathal is correct, 5.1 is rated as stable and has fixed a whole number of issue's with 4.9.4.  Also, 5.1 has a some new and expanded functionality.  Last week, when dotnetnuke.com was having issues and we had a rush of inquiries from customers about the stability of 5.1.  At that point we decided to pull it from our standard install to ensure our support team didn't get overwhelmed with support tickets.  Many times, when we make a decision like this, it is centered around ensuring a high level of service to our customers, and it's not necessarily an indictment of dotnetnuke.

I will check with support to make sure that the their responses to issues like this are current and up to date.  It was determined that a number of the issue's dotnetnuke.com was having were related to hardware and not DNN itself, so it should not be considered a software bug.

With software, it's always a little bit risky to go with ".1" releases, but this one did go through extensive QA and testing, so it may be a good choice for you.  I know there are quite a few people running it in production right now, so I'm sure someone will chime in and let you know about their experiences.  My personal experience with 5.1 has been positive thus far.  Thanks and sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for the feedback, and an explanation of the e-mail I received from your support staff.

Cheers,

I wish a realistic approach was used in giving stats.   Only 2500 upgrades were downloaded.   12,000 is all categories added up.
