Try setting up a DB on the web server, if you can. This will check any possible port issues, if there are any.

My guess is that the conn string is bad, so if you could test that, it might help.

I'm a newb, so this might not be the answer, but you never know..

I have noticed that the 4.x DNN webconfig files all have two connection strings; one for SQL Server 2000, and the other one for SQL Server 2005 - they are different, and it looks to me like the sql 2005 one is the default one, and sql 2000 is commented out. I use sql 2000 so i remove the connection string for 2005 and remove the <-- --> that is around the sql 2000 connection string.

I think there are 2 connection strings? one for connection and the other for App settings or something?

I am getting this same error.  I assume its my connection string.  If SQL 2005 is sitting on the same box as my webserver and assuming my Server2003 name is TRITON, what should the Server=***** be? I have tried TRITON and continue to get the same error.

The default value Server=(local) should work if they are on the same box.
You could also try with the IP number of the machine
