The Nav skinobject together with DNNMenuNavigation provider is a menu in this site Products to About and the admin and host tabs/pages.

The admin part at the top when logged in is not a menu its a core pane.

NAV  will render the page structure of the site.
Not sure what you mean with internal navigation, but mostly I use the announcement module for things like that.
