you can try to copy paste the machineKey from the old web config to the new web config.

i have experiencing the issue, i can not login to the DNN 5.1.1 upgrade (from DNN 5.0.0).

copy paste the machineKey solve my problem.

okay, I copied a machine key from a web.config that worked. it didnt seem to make any difference. none of the modules are visible, I can login as host, registering new users throws errors, the thing is broken. for example accessing the module definitions page shows: Error: Module Definitions is currently unavailable. also: Message: System.MissingMethodException: Method not found: 'System.Collections.Hashtable DotNetNuke.Services.Authentication.AuthenticationConfigBase.get_ModuleSettings()'. at DotNetNuke.Authentication.OpenID.Config..ctor(Int32 portalId) at DotNetNuke.Authentication.OpenID.Config.GetConfig(Int32 portalId) at DotNetNuke.Authentication.OpenID.Login.get_Enabled() at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.Authentication.Login.BindLogin() Anybody? I have multiple portals on this an of course they are broken also.

Suggest you restore from backup and take Sebastians advice.
This time when you do the upgrade make sure you've got the machine key sorted.
Have you tried the XML merge method (google: dotnetnuke xml merge upgrade), this should do it all automatically.

Once you are reverted you should upgrade to 5.1.2 (but make sure you back up so you can revert quickly! - or run a test upgrade on your localmachine :).

Ha!  "restore from backup" that would be nice. The upgrade went fine in another environment so, stupidly, I assumed that the upgrade would go  fine in this environment. Alas, it didnt', now I'm left with a partially working dnn site. Any other suggestions? is there a switch on the intall=mode that I can get to run this again?
