Hi,

I have been trying to upgrade my 4.9 version to 5.1.2 and it keeps giving me this error so the upgrade can't start:

The Auto option has been disabled as the DotNetNuke Application cannot connect to a valid SQL Server database. You can continue to use either of the other two Wizard options and configure the Database settings at the appropriate Wizard step.

Any help appreciated, I am using SQL Express 2005 what should my webconfig connection look like?

Plenty of clues available if you google: "The Auto option has been disabled as the DotNetNuke Application"

Cheers

I can understand how this message could confuse you as it confused me the first time I saw it.

Basically you just need to use one of the other install methods as your web.config file does not have a correct database connection in it.

I normally use the "typical" install when I see this message & just follow the steps in the wizard to instal dnn.

The problem is I already have a version of DNN installed and I am trying to upgrade it.  I did the typical install but it wanted to create a new db and such but I already have one that I want to use.

you shouldn't get this message displayed on upgrades, unless you screwed up your installation.

To upgrade from DNN 4.8.x, I strongly suggest upgrading in 2 steps via DNN 4.9.5.

To perform the upgrade, start with a complete backup of your files and database.

Stop the web site or app pool and unzip files from upgrade package hierarchically into DNN installation directory, overwriting existing files.

start the site or app pool and browse to the homepage, which should trigger the upgrade scripts.

Good Luck!
