Hi,

First off let me say that I am new around here and this place is awesome. I have learned quite a few tricks/tips for DNN since coming across it. I have a question and I was hoping some of you DNN gurus could help me out.

I run a website based in St. Louis, MO. We feature all sorts of content including sports/music/politics/ladies columns, picture galleries, hot chicks, etc.  About a year ago, we had a site built from a 3rd party provider to help solve all our problems. We went from a PHO based site into a new DNN base site. Before the redesign, our Alexa ranking was right around 90-100k pretty consistently. After the switch and for the last year, we have watched our Alexa ranking steadily decline while our visits/hits/pageviews keep climbing. Now, our Alexa stands around 300k, yet all of our other numbers are MUCH higher than they used to be. I was curious if anyone had ideas on why we might see this or if there is something in DNN that Alexa does not play well with and we are not getting indexed correctly?

I am 100% sure that our Alexa number is not accurate and we should be much higher than we stand now, I just do not know what to do to fix the problem. Any help/information ANY of you could provide would be very, very much appreciated. Thanks everyone, I look forward to your responses.

Hi Bluebuddha,

This is a tough question, and not much to do with DNN I don't think (it has no affect on Alexa). I think the easiest way to find out is to check your Google Analytics to see if traffic has increased or decreased since your site changed (to DNN). If it increased, but Alex dropped, then there is still the possiblity that every other site in the world increased faster than yours.

If it decreased then maybe the new design is not as good as used to be.

On PokerDIY, I get around 1500 unique users a day and am battling to stay in the top Alexa 100k (107k I think at the mo). Thats around 140k page views a month to be around that mark to give you some idea...

So... check your other metrics to see if they add up...

Since Alexa counts things like pageviews it is possible that it is seeing some different pages as the same page, which could affect the ranking.

I would get an SEO person who is knowledgable about Alexa to look your site over.  It does not make sense that the traffic should rise but the Alexa rank should fall.

Hi guys, thanks for the responses. Our site averages around 150-200k pageviews daily with around 7-9k unique visitors between the regular site and the forum. I know that our Alexa should be much higher than it is registering currently, I just do not know why that is. It almost seems as if our pages are NOT being indexed correctly or it is not counting the pageviews properly. Any ideas on how we can correct this?

alexa  "counts" your visitors only if they installed the alexa toolbar. From the data they receive from the toolbar, the "real " numbers are extrapolated. So: a low alexa ranking means that either you have a lot of visitors that do not use the toolbar, or you have very few visitor that do use the tool bar.

If i were you i would use other means to measure your website's success, such as google pagerank etc.
