I am not a web/programmer of any sort. This was the main reason I would put up PHP sites because they were relatively easy to setup and manage. Going through the code seemed to be easy. I understand some things in html code but as I said I am no expert by any means.

With all that being said a friend of mine recommended DNN last year and I tried it but found it to be relatively poor on performance. Maybe it was my web host but I did try 4 webhosts and it did the same thing for all of them.

Come to the present date and time and I am looking to build a couple sites again. I was wondering what has changed and I wanted to get everybody's take on using or not using DNN. Also if you have any recommendations on training/books I can use also any type of minimum requirements to run DNN.

I am looking to build 2 different sites. 1 is a personal site for family and friends with blog stuff, photots, videos etc. The 2nd site is to review items and blog about them so to speak.

A lot to ask I know but I hope this helps

Thanks for all your input

Aaron

Hi Aaron --

I'm trying to find an answer on your subject question for a couple of months now.  I have found that DNN community in general is rather busy, and to get a prompt answer is usually rather problematic. Therefore very often you'll find yourself on your own. Hopefully this thread will not be the case.

To speed-up with DNN (self-)learning/development I'd recommend to invest some money - that seems to be a rule here - investing about USD500+ into online tutorials, ready to use skins and modules as well as professional and reliable DNN hosting will let you to make some great looking DNN sites in short time.

Tutorials - look e.g. at http://www.dnncreative.com

Skins, modules,...:  look e.g. at http://www.snowcovered.com/

My experience is that DNN web sites are usually a bit slow but there are quite a few exceptions:

http://www.sonicwallsecure.com/
http://www.powerdnn.com/
http://www.invenmanager.com

How they do that - is an open question to me. Is that all hardware dependent or there are some DNN tricks & modules to speed-up DNN sites - I still can't find generally applicable recommendations from DNN professionals...

<<<1 is a personal site for family and friends with blog stuff, photots, videos etc.>>>>

Look e.g. at ActiveSocial - http://www.activemodules.com/products/activesocial.aspx

<<<The 2nd site is to review items and blog about them so to speak.>>>

Look e.g. at www.dnnprofessor.com products

One of the advantages of DNN is its flexibility - nearly everything can be done by using proper extensions - modules, skins, etc.

The DNN performance is controlled by
a) machine resources
b) DNN caching configuration
c) number and quality of installed resources

There are a number of good books, online tutorials and individual support in these forums - but of course, it takes some time to get familiar with a new powerful systems and numerous options.

Is there a recommended number of resources or settings I would need to look for in a webhost? Documentation for performance settings?

Thanks for the help.
