Would like to use DNN 4 instead of commercial solution like SchoolCenter or SchoolFusion but have questions.

I would like to have single sign-on for district (parent) and school (child) portals so I can setup a teacher forum on the district page.  I would also like to be able to roll-up calendars using the new events module from child portals to the district (parent) portal.  I have so far not been able to see a solution to either question.

Any advice for setting up a school district all under one portal.  This would solve both problems above, but would not allow me to use different logos for each school unless I create a different skin for each school.  I would like to let the teachers choose from any of the skins for their pages also.  Child portals just seem to be a better choice here and I can have an administrator for each school.

Do you know of any school districts who have already solved these issues that I could look at as an example?

Do you know of a DNN professional that has setup something similar for another school system or organization that could help me with phone and remote consulting.  11 schools - small budget of course.

Any ideas or help is very much appreciated.

Thanks

I am also designing a replacement website for my school district.  I posted a question at the following link that you might be interested in.  http://dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/forumid/118/threadid/35103/scope/posts/Default.aspx

My school distrcit has 5 schools and I am designing it with mainly the same requirements that you are with the main District website being the host site, and each school will be a child site of that site.  As far as user accounts, we might try out the Active Directory module so that each employee has their own account so that we can target different people with different information.  Our current website is a hosted content management system designed for schools, but it is not close to as nice as DNN.  One feature that I need though, and that is to enable each teacher to have the ability to edit their own page from their own login account.  Maybe the core team can come up with something for this on a future version.

Good luck on your portal,

We have decided to use SchoolFusion (Commercial) instead of DNN.

Doing the same thing. See eduperform.com c/o opensourcesis.org and techfutures.org.

Here are two HS student teams competing to create a district parent portal and high school child portals as part of an Advanced Web Database Applications class. Will be done by first week of June, 2006 (in time for graduation). Visit

tfxtreme.eduperform.com (parent- district)

teamorion.eduperform.com (parent- district)

to see the results.

Child Portals can be easily created by the host account.  You can also use the DNNStuff Portal Creator to help create child portal admin accounts. You can load your skins to all child portals or parent portals to make sure everyone, even teachers, have a choice.

Create Templates and make Child Portal Creation easy. Use roles for Administrators, Staff, Counselors, Teachers, Parents, Students, and Public. The AD module is nice for leveraging a districts current network investment, especially if the district hosts it's web servers.

Modules like ReportXP allow you to max out your sql server investment and ms reporting services, by affording important reports to all your users. And why not WebMail...time to get ride of groupwise....

Last but not least, take a look at module that allow users to create their own content - wiki, mypage, messages, etc. Portal Admin modules are a must, too, like site analysis.

The greatest thing about DNN and the .NET framework is that it allows you to deploy iteratively, meaning that you can develop and test new functions and features safely, ensuring your district portal delivers a world class user experience. For mutlilingual districts, DNN is the only answer. The other vendor related services are miles away (and the distance grows everyday) from DNN.
