Hi I'm a web dev and I'm moving a client's client to his new hosting environment. I set up DNN, but all I'm given were The backup files as an exported Skin, and the Site Template complete with content. I'm told this is all I will need. But I'm a little lost. I've got to get this site restored today, but I'm facing a learning curve here. I'm confident I can pull it off (I'm just good that way *wink*), but can anyone direct me to a tute or something that can get me pointed in the right direction? I know I have to create a new portal with all their content, but I'm just not sure of the steps at this point.

Any love would be greatly appreciated. Reading the manual now, but I need to warp speed to these specifics. Thank you.

To successfully move a DNN website, you really need a complete backup of the file system PLUS a backup of the database. Although a portal template will contain some of the site content, many modules including some core modules do not participate in the import/export functions needed to make that approach work. Also, the portal template will not include user accounts, security roles, etc. Before importing the portal template into another DNN site, you would also have to make certain that the new site already has installed all of the modules definitions that were in use on the old site.

A better way is to make a complete backup of site's file system and a backup of the database then transfer the files to the new host and restore the database backup to the new database. For more information on this approach, please review these links:

That's what I thought as well, and I requested these from the old host. They informed me that they had multiple sites (portals) hosted on the same DNN database so they couldn't give me a backup of the db. Also there were licensing issues. I was told there was only one 3rd party module missing that I would have to purchase and install. They assure me they've moved dozens of DNN sites using only these files. *clears throat*.

At any rate, am I stuck here or do I have a starting point? I have DNN installed. I have the default portal up. Like I said I have the skins, containers, pages, files I need. Where do I go from here? How do I import my skin? or template? in order to restore those pages properly?

Thanks,

These were the instructions I was given by the old host (the expert). "you’ll want to create a new portal using the site template we provided, that will load all the pages and their content, then unzip the skin into the portal’s skin folder and reassign it to the skin.  Everything will work at that point except for any 3rd party module licensed content that was host licensed (which is just the LiveContent Modules by Mandeeps I believe), once you purchase and install those modules they’ll work fine."

How do I go about creating a new portal with the site template? Do I import to default? Do I instal in the Host settings? I was given two zip files. One had skins and containers in it and another had the template in it.

K, I created a new child portal based on the exported template he gave me and all the pages and content seemed to show up, but the skins and containers were missing of course. So I unzipped them and uploaded them to the new portal, but when I try to point the pages to the the skins it simply doesn't work. It's as if the files just aren't there. Any ideas? I've come a long way, baby. The site is http://www.lmmclamb.com/dnn/mclamb.
