I really like DNN but I'm extremely frustrated with the difficulty of finding skin development information.  Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places, but I'd like a guide to creating skins for the latest (5.2.x) version of DNN; starting from scratch.  What, exactly, do I need to install prior to development?  Visual Studio Web Developer?  Some templates?  I've Googled it and found bits and pieces of information here and there, but it's sparse and usually outdated by at least a few years.  Is there anywhere I can go for an up-to-date guide on how to get started with DNN skinning?

Some things I'm looking for:

-DNN skinng prerequisites

-converting the skin to a DNN-recognizable package and exporting it

Thanks in advance.

It's not free, but the subscription pays for itself in productivity, and the support from the dnncreative team is top notch.

The "old" skinning documentation is still 90% correct. Almost all changes for DNN5 can be found in this thread:

There is a link to current skin objects list in this thread:

Skinning is only editing text files, whether HTML or ASCX.  You can use any editor, though many will choose to use one of the Visual Studio series, such as Visual Web Developer Express.  Read the skinning documentation for how to get started, you do the same thing with DNN 3 as DNN 5 so it's all valid for starting.  DNNCreative has a few free tutorials that would get you started as well.
