Steve, I envision you facing some risk and a lot of troubles, if you start using MYSQL. I strongly suggest using MS SQL 2005/2008, usually free Express version is sufficient for small and medium sized sites.

Thank you Sebastian, we needed to be sure. There is a cost overhead for continuing with MSSQL Server but given that this is a project that will grow quickly we cannot take the chance on using SQL Express or MySQL just because they are free. We will stick with MSSQL Server 2005 and accept the cost as the reliability of the website is far more important.

you may even start with SQL Server Express (attached database, using SQL Server connection string) and subsequently switch to a paid version, depending on your needs.

Following our problem with a hosted website we have decided on paying extra for MSSQL Server 2008. However, we have another requirement and have opted for a smaller website which will serve as a satellite site, which means low traffic. Having installed DNN Community Edition 05.02.03 we downloaded MS SQL Express and created a database DNN. We added user (server name/ASPNET) and then  ran the DNN install routine. However we then got an error (error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) and could not go any further. What have we missed because we have done this process several times on our own server without any problems.

In IIS manager, please check the account being used for the application pool, your site is running in (it should be set to integrated mode).
