I can understand concerns, something that would probably only be relieved after taking a closer look at OWS. They may not have worded it too well on the site as it certainly doesn't have DNN as an afterthought but has evolved from ListX, in the past one of the most powerful development tools for DNN. It runs entirely within DNN like other modules, though they have been developing it further to be able to work outside DNN also. As a non-programmer myself, it's empowered me to do just about anything I want in DNN so I rarely need to touch much else these days as it can run as a skin object, as a module or as a scheduler item.

If you like the idea, you can vote for it in Gemini.

Paul, thanks - IMHO this is a main subject for announced feature "PortalGroups", which has been announced for "DNN Cambrian" (i.e. DNN 5)  at OpenForce conferences in 2008.

RE: Inventua shadow "only allows you to configure the content to come from another portal in DNN 3 and 4, so that rules that out"

This is not correct, the DNN 5 version does allow you to shadow content from another sub-portal, just like the DNN 3 & 4 versions.

Thanks Anthony, that is good to know.

You might want to take a look at the documentation for the DNN 5 version of the module on your site (http://www.inventua.com/shadow-documentation.content). It gave me the impression at least that the cross-portal feature had been removed for DNN 5.

I'll give your module a try as it looks promising for the requirement I have.

@Anthony, have given the module a whirl, and I think it will work for us. The only concern I have is over security. I don't want to have to give content editors super-user privileges so that they can access content in other portals. I really want a super-user to be able to grant access to content in other portals to specific roles in the "receiving" portal. Is that currently possible, or do you think it would be a useful enhancement to the module?

Cheers,
