I know it's been a long time, but did you figure it out?  Just recently the same thing happened  to me.  I noticed that there was a photothumbs file and a thumbs file (data base file) that I'm assuming were automatically created because I don't remember those being in there when I was renaming the pictures, anyhow, I deleted thos files and zipped my folders again and the upload of the zipped folder worked.

Thumbs.db is a Windows system file created when viewing images as thumbnails. I suspect that PhotoThumbs is a similar file created by some other photo viewing program. These would have to be manually excluded when creating a zip file for upload to Gallery.
