Hi Dan,

I doubt there is a direct upgrade path from version 3 to version 5.

You may be able to upgrade to the latest version of 3, then the latest version of 4 and then to 5.

I think this would be a bit messy so it might be best to install 5 as a new install and then migrate your content over.

cheers

you may upgrade in multiple steps via 4.3.7, 4.6.2 and 54.9.5. you may follow my upgrade checklist: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/AboutDotnetNuke/V3V4TippsTricks/Upgradedurchführen.aspx

Will Strohl's blog post which fortunately gets regularly updated both by Will and those making comments should be of help to you:

If the site is remotely hosted, I would recommend that you pull down a local copy of the files and database and work through the upgrade sequence on the local copy. When you are (finally) successful in reaching the destination version you can either repeat the steps remotely or migrate the locally upgraded copy of files and datebase back to the server.

I had recently done an upgrade from 3.1.1 to 5.2.3 - not easy due to a number of issues that had to be corrected along the way and not a quick process - but ultimately successful. Once you get to DNN 4.9.5, I would recommend that you then go directly to 5.2.3 or 5.3.1. Don't forget to make backups of both the file system and database before each upgrade step and retain each incremental backup until you know you reach the destination version and have thoroughly tested the site.

As was mentioned,  the other approch would be to do a fresh install and migrate the content from the old site. Unless you are very well skilled in SQL and are not concerned with migrating user accounts, I would not recommend that approach.
