for missing checkbox, please see http://support.dotnetnuke.com/Default.aspx?p=2&i=12957 to edit profile property texts including localization, please use the editor inside Admin :: User Accounts, there should be no need to edit files manually. This file might show up in language editor, when in "Portal" mode, but there is no real need, IMHO. Missing category titles have been reported multiple times already - I don't know, why it had been removed.
If you, however, need a nice looking registration page, I suggest using a 3rd party component, like from datasprings. com

the solution !  I figured it out.  The trick is editing the Profile.ascx.Portal-0.resx  the problem was editing the right one. In a previous tutorial http://www.dnncreative.com/Tutorials/DNNTutorialsforAdministrators/TermsandConditionsonUserRegistration/tabid/279/Default.aspx  the path given was admin/users/App_localresources

In DNN5  the path is /DesktopModules/Admin/Security/App_localResources  hope this helps the next person :)

Stephen, the easiest and safest option is editing from within Edit Profile Properties inside Admin :: User Accounts.

Didn't know that was possible , I tried putting the tag in yesterday didn't work.  Only worked when I edited the resx file.  Oh well all is working now.

one little nit pick -  shouldn't the label Property Name be Property Text then on the  manage localization page?
