DNN is moving quickly with new and important functionality every quarter and monthly stabilization reseases in between. There is a lot more staff and developers working for DNN and the future really does look bright.

Unfortunately not everything is looking bright, e.g. most of my client portals are still on 5.2.3 (mid February) or 4.9.5 (last year), the reason being is that I did not dare to upgrade. The last 8 releases (if I am counting correctly) have had issues with certain well known module I frequently use, localization problems or page management problems and more. I don't want too sound harsh, but want to make a point that having another stabalization release may actually be a good thing, especcially with the big 5.5 release coming up. E.g. problems like page management issues: 12892, 12908 that severly influences content management by clients, but there are a significant number of other high severty issues that are equally important.

Based on experience, the planned 5.5 release will solve a number of issues, but will likely introduce other (and severe ones). It will likely take a number of iterations (months) before the ML features will be stable enough for commercial use.

So my question is: what do you think, is another stabalization relase a good thing?

I think the problem is self-defined: "stabilisation release". A release to stabilise what went before. I have worked in IT for 28 years and I did my time in configuration management and change control and regression testing etc. It's hard, very hard and I feel for the developers and testers who have to keep to this aggressive (macho?) release schedule. The thing is, there are only two reasons to take a new version: 1) It fixes bugs 2) It gives me new features I know for sure that our clients are not interested in a (feature) release more than TWICE a year. Most of them would be happy with ONCE or even less. They will tolerate a (bug fix) release if they have been suffering with a particular problem but their view is that "this should not have been there in the first place". So, given the above, my suggestion would be to S-L-O-W D-O-W-N ! Take more time testing, don't be so concerned with pushing new features (hey, how about a vote from the community about what goes in the next release?). Most importantly, get off this self-imposed monthly 'stabilisation release' treadmill because it looks and feels like it's self-fulfilling and causing more work than benefit. Peter, I cannot disagree, but given the situation, that the release schedule, which has been set up by DNN Corp. Board of Directors / Advisory Board needs to be fulfilled by the development team, it doesn't sound realistic to me.

With a strong Qualty Assurance manager this should not be a problem.
However I don't know what the qualty goals are.

But as a user and have looked at the 5.5 changes it looks like a 5.4.5 would be a valid path.

I would also love to see more stabilization releases.  Though, there are challenges that perhaps prevent that from happening, one of which Sebastian pointed out.

However, the engineers are more than aware of what needs to be done to ensure quality (probably more than any of us), and they are putting more controls and checks into place to further solidify all releases.  I am excited to see these work, as I know everyone else is too.  :)
