I am also getting this error when I try to upgrade from 4.9.5 to 5.4.4:

00:01:16.727 - Installing Optional Modules:
00:01:16.730 -   Installing Package File HTML_Community_05.04.03_Install:
Error!
00:01:18.914 -   Installing Package File Messaging_01.01.00_Install:
Error!
00:01:19.452 -   Installing Package File Taxonomy_01.01.00_Install:  Error!
00:01:19.614 -   Installing Package File Telerik_05.04.00_Install:  Success
00:01:21.043 - Installing Optional Skins:

I have read the Gemini description that Stefan referred to:

The update code tries to save a copy of the Default Page template, without testing whether it is still present.
If one portals has no page template, an exception is raised and a lot of actions will not be executed.

Error message:
InnerException: Could not find file 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Portals\46\Templates\Default.page.template'.

However, I cannot find any error log that has a similar message for my upgrade. I have ensured that all portals have a Template folder with the file in them: Default.page.template.

I don't really want to go to version 5.5 yet because it is still a beta release. Is there any way I can get this to work without fixing and recompiling the source, or must I wait for the official 5.5 release?

I got rid of the three errors by deleting the \portals\_default\EventQueue\EventQueue.config file, as suggested by Joe Brinkman ( http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/V... ).

I now just have the one remaining error (aside from the sql 05.00.00 error, saying it could not drop non-existing constraints):

00:01:15.561 -   Executing Application Upgrades: 05.03.00 Error!

I presume it is this error that is keeping the website from working. When I click on the link at the bottom of the upgrade screen, it says:
An error has occurred.
An error has occurred.

...with a big red and white X graphic on the left of the two messages.

Any ideas on how to track down this error, and/or fix it?

I'm afraid not (without having source and database access). It's not a great suggestion, but I'd suggest waiting for 5.5.0 to come out - it's had a lot of fixes added to it, with a number dealing with upgrade scenarios, so potetially it may resolve this without having to get into a lot of diagnostics.
