I may be a bit off topic, but wouldnt each portal/host/module that uses SMTP to send emails have its own SMTP Settings for credentials for sending emails?  It just seems each portal and module instance should be able to configure the SMTP to use its own SMTP account to send the emails to help avoid making the host account get blacklisted for spam.

For example it makes sense to me for each portal to have SMTP settings as far as user account/password/authentication goes. Then if you use a module like a forum, newsletter or feedback these modules should have an option to use the portal SMTP settings or enter new ones to send the email from a different account/email server.

Host SMTP settings you may not want to share with all the other portals. This should be independant from each portal and possibly each module.

I know phpBB forum is opensource and written in PHP, I have used it for a decade now and never had a problem sending out mass emails to everyone from the account I specify the forum to use.

I use another system that has a number of email accounts you can specify as "from" addresses using one SMTP setting and it sends the email fine from my server however all the "from" address are from the same domain.  IE one is support, contact, feedback, billing and so on... never had an issue sending emails.

Of coarse this is PHP, a programming language built by a bunch of freebie programmers... .NET has billions invested into it, who would expect it to work so smooth?

So I am frustrated as anyone trying to work with feedback, newsletter and forum along with portal registrations and sending emails or making a contact form.

Pretty basic stuff by now I would think it should be.  I hope the next release there is some serious time spent on the SMTP and performance side of DotNetNuke.  Seems to be glitchy almost to the point of going back to php.  I am a die hard Microsoft supporter as this is my life... and have waited long to see a CMS system open source that works well with good features.  DNN is getting there and I hope the community works out the bugs in the CE.  I wish I had more time to spend working on things but it seems like everyone has their own direction and I dont want to spend time reinventing the wheel if I dont have to.

Just some food for thought... having the option for SMTP settings per portal/module

I'm getting a "Service Unavailable" message when I use the newsletter to send out an email.  Not sure why, but it sounds like the same problem here.  It means also that account verification emails cause the same problem.  This is very frustrating as it is holding back my website go-live.

Any ideas on fixes, or when 5.5 is out?

Thanks

Do you see any errors under Admin, Event Viewer? We did work with one client on building an updated 5.4.4 build for a site that was live. If you want to go this route we offer these services at http://www.datasprings.com/PremiumSupport. You might also want to try out the 5.5 beta, we have a few clients running on it and they seem to be pleased. -Chad

Thanks Chad.

No, no errors - just crashes the site - service unavailable.  Very annoying.  Working to find a resolution with my host provider at the moment.

There is a bug in async mode only, which is sending smtp text from and to host email, but fails sending mails, if sender's email address is not accepted by the mail server. I provided a fix in Gemini, which hopefully will get validated and included in DNN 5.5.1. Service not available is usually issued according to database problems or mail server not available. please go to Host Settings and validate SMTP server settings in there, as well as review eventlog error message.
