I did a new installation for DNN 5.4 for the community edition. Then I put some files that seems like they were done on an old version of DNN, not sure since I didn't do them, however when I try to build the site on Visual Web Developer 2010 Express I get the  "Parser Error Message: Stream is not a valid resource file"  error. I search and some post said to change the ASP back to 1 instead of 2, others say to delete the 2 files with resources extension and other post say to delete the 2 weird characters at the beginning of line 1 on the resource file. Unfortunately none of them work for me. I'm very new to DNN and I need some help please. I'm basically just trying to build a test enviroment.

Thanks in advance for the help.

you do not need to build the site in VS, are you trying ti create a custom module or edit content?

Thanks for your reply Sebastian. I think I'm very lost then. I'm trying to build like a test enviroment on my local machine with our web site files. However i never use DNN before and i download DNN and it opens fine, but when i put the website files and i open from browser I get that error. I open VS and try to rebuild and i get the same error. I'm not creating any module or edit any content. I really don't know how to manage the site through DNN on my machine. I log on through the site, but i want to open on my local machine just as it would be live. I found out that the site it's base on DNN 3, so another error that i get it's that the version doesn't match with the DNN version. I download latest version 5.4. As of now when i open DNN on localhost i just get the DNN template, but i want to open my site. Any way you can help? Thank you .

you don't need DNN to install a website or add content - it is only needed to create extensions like modules or providers. To Install DNN 3 locally, you need to have the IIS web site cofigured to support ASP.Net 1.1 and SQL Server installed. Copy all files to the local web site folder, adjust both database connection strings in web.config to meed your local SQL Server. Backup original database and restore on local machine, go to table Portal Alias and add local web site address as additional entry for your Portal. If you have further question, please post and provide your OS version (XP, Vista, Win7).

Ok I understand. So I'm doing it from start again. - I couldn't find DNN 3 so I download the lates one V.5 - I backup and restore database on SQLEXPRESS - I setup IIS to ASP.NET 1.1 - I copy my site files on new local web site folder - I add the local address entry to PortalAlias table NOTE: - I have Windows XP PRO QUESTION: - On PortalAlias table I see the other portals that my site has which I need access to them as well. Do I have to put the local site address as well on those portals or just Portal 0 would do? - Once I run the site on my browser http://localhost/DNNSite/ I get an error which is obious because of the different version of DNN. Do i need to find DNN3 and download it or I can do something to upgrade it to DNN5? This is the error: DotNetNuke Upgrade Error The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] ) ERROR: Could not connect to database. SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
