Thanks for your reply but  as a noob I just don't understand how to edit config files, set permissions etc.

This is very frustrating - I've tried the starter kit, the install wizard and now the web installer - ALL FAILED.

I should add that I am an experienced PHP/MySQL developer and have used lots of CMSs on that platform without ever experiencing these sorts of installation problems - not a boast just an indication that I can follow install instructions.

Is it really that difficult for you guys to put together an installer that actually works?

I could share your frustration.  But I have also tried some applications using MY-SQL as its Database, and I have also first to setup the database before I install that application.

So if you particular with MY-SQL it suld not very hard to move to MS-SQL, sure something is different and also to the UI.  Also the ASP.NET is something more secure as on some php-hostings.

All changing to a new system or biger Version updates needs some learning, and I am sure our community want help you to learn it out. But we need detailed informations what's going wrong.

So if you haven't read the install instruction you can found free documentation on this links:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Support/Hel...
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Support/Doc...

On the last link is also a detailed installation guide, I used as I started on 2005 with DNN.  It helps me to worked it out.

One thing I was mentioned to you is that Dotnetnuke isn't only a CMS, it is also a Portalsysem and a framework for webapplications.  So there are many szenariouses where you can use DNN.   This makes it needed to give a very secure system to all users of DNN.  The high security was the No1 thing that brings me to DNN and I not used any php applications.

Feel free to ping me if you need more assistance!

Thanks for the reassurance but I think you misunderstand me - I have read the installation guide and yes given enough time I could probably read all the other docs and eventually work it out but I wanted to learn DNN adminisgtration not asp.net and sql server!

But the main point I am making is that DNN is available as 3 separate easy installs:
1. VWD starter kit
2. as a web matrix web installer
3. DNNs own install wizard

and these are all supposed to be easy installs where the user does not have to create the database manually prior to using them or mess about with config files and connection strings...... but none of them works.

And it's not just my pc that they fail on there are loads of posts on this forum and around the net of people unable to install DNN.

So all I am saying is it doesn't matter what DNN offers if those behind it cant even ensure that their 'easy installer' works.

Offering 3 non-working install methods has wasted one day of my time - it will not waste another.

ps quick edit does not work on this forum!

IMHO starterkit is not an easy option, I always prefer install package or web platform installer (www.microsoft,com/web, I haven't tried out new Web Matrix beta yet). For manual install you need to setup web site and permissions, if you don't use SQL Express mode to access the database, you need to create a blank database and db user as well. Did you install SQL Server Express? How does your connection string look like (please don't post password here).

Sebastian, thanks for persevering but I am using sql express mode and have tried the web platform installer (www.microsoft,com/web) - I specifically wanted to aviod having to setup database, permissions etc.

I have not touched the connection string but I believe it is created when I  run in WVD (F5) as follows:

<connectionStrings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 Express -->
    <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
  </connectionStrings>
