For a certain module I downloaded, I've translated some words using the Language-editor. Possibly there will be a newer version of this module in the future. When I download this new module, can I behold the translations I've allready made?

Same goes for the entire site, when upgrading to a newer version of DotNetNuke. If I download a new version of DotNetnuke, how can I store all the translations I've made?

That depends on how you made the translations. There are three options

System (will be overwritten on upgrade)
Host (won't be overwritten on upgrade, but override-able at the portal level)
Portal (won't be overwritten on upgrade)

But that's great :)! No problems there!

Just out of curiosity, could you please explain me how the different options work? Why would I prefer translating in Host mode over Portal mode?

And does the same go for translations in modules?!

One applies to all websites in an Install (HOST) one applies to an individual website (Portal/Site)
