OK, to all those who tried to help, thank you. Nothing has worked. Installation is still extremely slow. I have even contacted the hosting company and had them verify the settings. So, as a final attempt to make this work, I plan to wipe out everything and start from scratch. When I originally installed the program, I knew nothing about it, and encountered several problems which had to be solved. Maybe I didn't solve them all. Installing it now should go a lot easier, since I am somewhat more familiar with the whole process.
I will report back on the results, so we will know one wy or the other. If it works, then DNN might want to revisit their installation documentation to make it more newbie friendly. If it does not work, and the new installation remains extremely slow, then I will assume that a problem exists with the Network Solutions web site hosting, and try one more host (one recommended for DNN websites) before giving up on the entire project.
I have everything backed up and ready to go, so I will get back here and let you know soon.
Thanks again for the assistance.
OK, I am finally ready to report on the results of my extensive investigations into the cause of my DNN being extremely slow! (see previous posts).
To recap, I installed a brand new installation of DNN5 on my existing hosted account with Network Solutions. The original instal was a bit shaky, due to my inexperience with the software, but I did get it working. Unfortunatley, the program was very slow, taking up to 2 minutes between page refreshes! I attempted every repair, reconfiguration, suggestion and fix possible, from everyone possible. I must mention at this point, that I received very little real assistance from network solutions on this problem. Multiple question tickets were responded to with single, scripted answers. Anyway, through a process of deduction, I determined the likely culprit for the poor performance is the way in which their sql databases must be accessed. You have to use either the IP address of the sql server, or a DSN connection. Evidently DNN can not be configured to use a DSN connection, so that only leaves the IP address. Unfortunately, the IP address of the sql server is an external IP, which means the data has to travel outside of their lan and make a round trip back. This would account for the performance hit.
No one at DNN or at Network Solutions was able to help me find a way around this problem, and since I wasn't totally sure that this was the actual cause, I continued with some further testing. I re-installed the application from scratch, after deleting the entire web root. Still no luck. Finally, I opened another web hosting account with IHost, a company supposedly specializing in osting DNN webs. After a few hiccups in getting the program installed, which they did help with, everything worked fine. Much faster! I really wasn't expecting that since Network Solutions is such a large and well known company, I expected more from them, but I have learned my lesson.
Thank you to everyone who helped, and I hope this helps someone else who may be hosted or considering hosting at Network Solutions
