Hi all,

I need to use DNN on my site having shared hosting. The server does not have DNN preinstalled. And I am given access to CPanel and a FTP User Id. I suppose i do not have any additional rights on the server. I can create a SQL Server database through CPanel.
How can I use DNN for my site? Any quick links? Any links for rapid development of dynamic pages.. to fetch & display data from SQL Server and authentication from other site thru Web service etc. will be appreciated.

Do I need to install DNN on my server? Copying source code of DNN on my server won't do any magic?

Please guide me. Thanks in advance.

first make sure, your hosting is windows hosting with MS SQL server. next you need to create (or identify, if existing) the hosting directory, which should be root of your website and configured as application. Make sure, default.aspx is configured as default document. Upload all files from DotNetNuke install package to your server (or ask your hosting provider). Create a database and a user account to be used, which need to be granted dbowner permission for your db. Browse your new site and the install wizard will show up.

Shared hosting has little to do with the ability to run dnn. Dnn will run in a shared environment just as well as on a dedicated server. I think if you can create a SQL database in cp, that will make you db_owner of the database and that is the permission dnn needs. However, check with your host.

There are however a few other requirements that will decide the fate of your dnn installation. You will need a MS SQL 2005 (or higher) database. MySQL will not do. Your host must offer ASP.NET with .NET vs 3.5 SP1. These are some of the requirements I can think of...

If all requirements are fulfilled, you would need to copy the installation files to the root of your website. You will edit the web.config file first and enter the correct connection settings (which you may have found in your cp when you setup the database) before ftp-ing all to your webhost. Don't use the source files for that. The source files are for who want to study dnn in a Visual Studio environment and eventually tweak it (not recommended)

And yes, if all works well, copying the installation files will do you magic ;-)

Just extract the dnn files to your hosting server and browse to it to start, it will ask for SQL server details during installation. make sure you have grant sufficient permission to the site directory.

You can install (following the above posted istructions) DNN to shared asp/net hosting plans, and it will run.

The Question is if it will be stable and run correctly, since MOST shared accounts are not good for Net applications. One easy way to find out is to check DNN event log (as HOST) and see if the Application restarts every few minutes or hours. Than means unstable or low on memory pool server.

Most hosting companies actually do not support well NET applications but they say the do. The result is that your memory hungry DNN restarts every now and then, pausing for 30-40 seconds each time or crash with Out of Memory errors. Some providers allow dedicated app pool BUT they set the ammount of memory very low, DNN needs at least 50 mb to work ok.

Good luck.
