The maschine Key on your 4.9.5 instance could not be set to "autogenerate". You have to use the Maschine Key from the 4.9.5 web.config file of your used instance, that is on your web server.

Basicly here are the steps you have to do if you want to use the install package for upgrade

  1. Check all 3rd party modules that are not from DotNetNuke if the compatible with DN 5.5.1
  2. Make a Backup of your Database and your files of the existing DNN instance
  3. Make a copie of the existing web.config file (eg. as bakweb.config)
  4. Extract the Install Package to your DNN instance
  5. Transfering settings for the 2 connection strings, maschine key, objectQualifier and databaseOwner, and the codeSubDirectories section of your copied Web.config file to the new web.config file
  6. Check the permissions for the IIS Annonymous user (only read access) and the Application pool user (full access) for all files, folders, sub folders and files in your DNN folder
  7. After you are sure all those things are correct you can run the upgrade.

This is an issue on your instance!  Thie autogenerate is set to autogennerate the maschine key on your installation and is changed to a generated key code on install .  The maschine Key is the encrypt code for all your passwords for your DNN users.

I think this was changed by any other update or else.  I could not know when this was done.  I preffer to check all your bachups of your files to find the correct maschine key!

i can go back to a web.config from 3-9-2008

and there it also says

<machineKey validationKey="AutoGenerate,IsolateApps"

So what now ?

Wim
