I've just attempted a test upgrade of DNN 4.9.5 to 5.5.1. When I went to /install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade (using the server) all it says is:

An Error has occurred. Please try again or contact a system administrator.

and it changes the path to /error.html?aspxerrorpath=/Default.aspx

Not much help. :-(  Thinking this lack of error message is due to the fix for that .NET issue last month.

Where do I go from here?

I would suggest you turn off the customerrors mode in your web.config file. Then read the error output. Restore the customerrors mode to its original value when you are done.

I have this in my web.config:

<!--Upgraded by Core Upgrade version 5.5.1 - Date: 9/23/2010 9:33:08 PM-->
    <!--<customErrors mode="Off" />-->
    <customErrors mode="On" redirectMode="ResponseRewrite" defaultRedirect="~/errorpage.aspx" />

Allows me to easily switch.

the change was introduced to apply the workaround suggested by Microsoft to leverage the oracle padding issue. After the .Net security patch has been issued, the workaround has not benefit and might be altered back.

Thank you. I will do that.

Yet, for DavidT, the issue is how to turn customerror off so he can read the error output. And that hasn't changed.
