And that was it exactly.  I had somehow ticked Edit on the All Users for the search module settings when it was added to all pages. I can reproduce and resolve the issue at will now by ticking and unticking that box.

Thanks for the keen perspective and fast response. I'm off and running again until my next stumble - and reading everything in sight as quickly as possible to raise the level of the "stupid question" bar...;-)
