I've got to admit I don't really understand. My question is.... messaging has been moved from the forum to core, but the core messaging doesn't work very well (I can't get it to work at all)..... am I missing something?

it hasn't actually been a move of code. Though forum and core developers work for the same company, they are in different teams and location, messaging has been added to DNN 5.3 from scratch with some fixes in subsequent versions. Chris decided afterwards to avoid duplication and removed this feature from forums module. I agree, there is still missing some nice integration as in competitive products, where readers have a link on the post to send a private message to the author. To answer your questions: there is a single folder (Inbox) only, used for drafts and received messages. When creating a message, you need to know addressed user name - dropdown is not provided. Messages are sent by email and internally to the inbox, new messages are indicated by a number behind the user name when logged in. Besides this, there are no configuration options or advanced features like attachments, priority, addressing multiple users, ...

OK thanks. I'm taking a look at ActiveForums then. I've had a loading fault with the freebie, so it's not working yet. It looks as if it'll do just about everything I'm after, and I see I can get an add-on to migrate the core forum to it. So I shall post the loading issue as instructed and continue having a play around with it. BTW, I wasn't saying that the code had moved, but that the functionality had moved.

Why not just use the PM module from Ventrian?

I'll take a look Ian, thanks.

I am considering ActiveForums though, which includes private messaging, I think. Researching now, as a 3rd party module or two definitely seems to be the answer. I really want something that integrates nicely into the Forum.

I noticed on this forum that the avatar is controlled through the main control panel, not the forum 'My Settings'. Does this forum use the core Forum with standard settings?
