of course you can use ANY datanase, you only need to create your own data provider for the core framework and all extensions with data access being used. Creating a provider for the core should take an experienced database developer only a couple of months of work and you for sure will earn the gratitude of the community (and compassion as well).... From business perspective, I would stick to MS SQL Server Server, for most small and medium sites, free SQL Server Express is working fine.

In fact there is a provider in Codeplex.

Never tested  it. Can't see any reason to use it.

If you need to talk to a PG database for a special purpose you can always do it for just that purpose.
