Hi there,

Im trying to install DNN 05.06.00 on my local PC for the umpteenth time and I'm having an error I've never seen before. These are the steps I have taken:

1. Downloaded and unzipped 05.06.00 Install to a suitable wwwroot folder
2. Set NETWORK SERVICE, LOCAL SERVICE, IUSR etc... permissions
3. Created a virtual directory in IIS (Windows 7)
4. Created a database using SQL Express 2005
5. Created logins/users for the database with a password
6. Edited the web.config file in the wwwroot dir to have the correct connection string for the database on my local SQL Server installation
7. navigated to localhost/mywebsite to start the install process

Now at this point I tried running the Typical install and when it got to "Installing Database Scripts" it just froze, never making any progress.

Instead I repeated steps 1-7 and ran "Auto". There were no connection problems and it ran all the scripts with success. Finally when navigating to my local website I get the dotnetnuke logo with this message:

"Dotnetnuke error"
"An Error has occurred"
"An Error has occurred"

So I dig into the database Event Log to see the real error message and I find this:

DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at DotNetNuke.Services.Localization.Localization.GetPageLocale(PortalSettings portalSettings)
at DotNetNuke.Framework.PageBase.get_PageCulture()
at DotNetNuke.Framework.PageBase.OnInit(EventArgs e)
at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer)
at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint)
--- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Googling for this error I find nothing. I wonder if any of you know what I can do to resolve this? I've tried around 5 times to recreate the database and start the install wizard again, no luck. I have another installation on my local PC that is working just fine. I tried copying the wwwroot files over and even pointing my broken install to the working database, still get the same error.

Arrgghh!!

No, But I did just refresh it (after leaving my computer idle for a few hours, hence IIS has unloaded the app) and lo and behold it works??!

Gosh 2 hours I was trying to get this to work earlier. Thanks for the suggestion, appreciate it :)

Any ideas why that would be the case? (App requires a restart after install?)

glad you were able to solve. obviously there are changes at the end of the upgrade process which require an app restart, though it is not triggered by the procedure.
