hi all,

is it possible to connect dnn3 to a sql server 2005 express edition database? i saw the connection string in dnn4's web.config file, but don't want to do anything until i am sure... do i just use that same string?  are there any other configurations?

let me explain... my future goal is to backup my sql server 2000 developers edition database (on home development computer) and restore it as a production msde database. then eventually upgrade the msde to 2005 express, hence my concern for the connection string...

i would appreciate any advice or input on this matter, thank you. oh, why not dnn4? i am more comfortable with vs .net 2003's development evironment and dll management.

Yes, it is possible; I am using this setup for the last 5 month without any problem. The connection string is the same as for sql 2000, sql 2005 or msde.

The new connection for sql express in dnn4's web config is a bit misleading. It is a special setup, instead of calling the sql server instance and requesting data out of a database, it tells sql express server which database file to load. It is only attached for the running dotnetnuke task.

I don't think that you really need to backup, install msde, upgrade...
Install sql 2005 express, detach your dnn database from sql 20000 developer, copy (NOT move) the corresponding mdf and ldf files to a new location, properly the data folder of sql 2005 express and attach them back -> You are done.
