moving a single portal is only possible by creating a portal template and a new site based on it - but be aware that there might be a number of settings and portal contents missing (only modules supporting iPortable interface export and import content)

One more thing, If I upgraded the DNN version to the latest one, would I still encounter errors with the export/import portal template?

there have been improvements to import/export, but even though, there is no chance to get modules included, which don't support the interface used.
