Hello,

I am having problems with installing the new version of DNN.  Here is the stats first:
Installation = NEW
Server = Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 2
DNN = Community Version 05.06.00
Database = SQL Server 2008 - SQLExpress
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Installed.
SQLExpress SQL Server 10.50.1600
Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0 installed.
Installation Path - F:\Inetpub\wwwroot\DNN
I have administrator access to the server.

Here is the problem:  The installation is having issues connecting to the database.  I worked on this and tryed manually to find the permissions problem since I have access to another version of DotNetNuke running on another server without issues.  But after days of work I ended up deleating the DNN folder in IIS Manager and then deleating the folder and contents of DNN.  I then started over by creating the folder again, unpacking the contents of the newly downloaded zip file into the DNN folder.  I then went into IIS Manger and installed a new Application Pool, and checked the properties for DNN as listed below.
Script_source access Checked.
Read - Checked
Write - Checked
Log_visits - Checked
Index this resource - Checked.
Application Name DNN
Execute permissions = Scripts and Executables
Application_Pool = DNN
ASP.NET version 2.0.50727
Virtual Path /DNN
File Location: F:\Inetpub\wwwroot\DNN\web.config

Connection parameter: LocalSqlServer =  data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true

SiteSqlServer = Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;

Authentication Methods = Enable Anonymouse access.
Authenticated access = Integrated Windows authintication.

Checked and Web Site is running.

SQL Server.
Checked to see if SQLEXPRESS is running.  I have a little green arrow.  So it is up.
Databases - only System Database now exist.  I had deleted the DNN database to start the new install.
NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE - LOGIN with Connect sa = Grant = checked.
ASPNET = the same.  sa checked under Grant.

When I try to launch the http://servername/dnn/install/install...  I get the following error:

Installing DotNetNuke

Upgrade Error: ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider.

Here is the connection string from win.config

<connectionStrings>

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 Express -->

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

-->

</connectionStrings>

I do not know how to re-set DNN installation to that it starts over.
I also do not know why the installation is not finding the database.

I have installed DNN previous versions many times and have never run into this before.  Any assistance would be greatly apprecated.

Thank you
Michael Adkins

you should not be using "LocalSqlServer = data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true", both connection strings are SiteSqlServer

As indicated in my notes above the connection strings were set to "SiteSqlServer"  So that was not the issue unless I am missing something.  Still trying to figure out why I have one site working and the other site not working and I am unable to install DNN right from the installation wizard.  The other site I had installed using Microsoft Web Site install program.  However, since the most recent update of DNN the Microsoft Installation fails trying to connect back to DotNetNuke site and download the files.  I hope that gets resolved soon because installation was much easier to follow.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

One advantage that I do have is I can compare my running site on one server with the one that is failing on the other server.  I have compared all the security including the Windows file security, IIS Security, and the SQLExpress Security.  That all matches as far as I can tell.  But the installation wizard is failing trying to locate the database.  See error below;

Installing DotNetNike

Upgrade Error: ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvidir

But everything looks correct in the Web.config file.

Have you create manuelly the database on your SQL Server using SQL Management Studio express ?  If not you have to do this if you not used the MS Webinstaller.  Also you have to add the databaseuser and adding him to the database as dbowner with schema "dbo".

If you used the file based connection you could only have one connection.  So if you have opened the file on SQL Mangement Studio you can not connect with DNN.  You have first unmount the database on your SQL Management Studio.

I have now started over. Removed everything and started from scratch.  Comparing with the site that I have running.  I am at the Configure Database Connection Screen.  Here is my selections;

Select Database:   SQL Server 2005/2008 (Express) is checked.  I am running SQL Server Express 2008.

Server .\SQLExpress

Filename: Database.mdf

Integrated Security is checked.

Run as db Owner: is checked

Object Qualifier: is empty.

When I click on next here is the error that I get.
