  1. You cannot create ASP.Net 1.1 modules with VWD, your modules are running in DNN 4 only
  2. Current DNN project modules are created with VS2003 / ASP.net 1.1, so they can run in DNN 3 and 4. They might not be useful as templates for DNN 4 modules.
  3. For a description, how to create DNN 4 modules, have a look at http://adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DNN_Module4/

Thank you for the clarification and reference. I am still tearing my hair out (and there is not so much of that left!) trying to locate the Survey.ascx.vb file. It must exist because the DotNetNuke Module Developers Guide refers to it on page 30 and elsewhere.

I installed DNN 4 via the installation kit and I cant see it there. So I have downloaded, unzipped and searched the source code and it is not there. I see other people have the same problem. Soo I have downloaded the code from the Projects page on the DNN site and it is not there! So I found some suggestion to download 3.1.1 source code and I have done that and I still can't find it.

What am I doing wrong???

My original question still remains - where have the Survey.ascx.vb and EditSurvey.ascx.vb files gone? Where can I see this code?

I shall be very, very grateful to get an answer on this. It must be obvious. But the obvious is not observable and the observable is not obvious!

I have just repeated my original question in a post that is yet to moderated...

... and I have meanwhile found the answer by surfing other forums, specifically the Feedback Module. It is aquestion that comes up again and again. I will answer here for the benefit of others. It seems you have to download the 3.1.1 source code from the Project Page (rename the resources file as a zip file and there it is. (This is a new computer and I had to go into Control Pane;>Folder Options to see the file extension at all).

Thank you everyone for your help. It was a dumb question but maybe this process should be better explained in the documentation.

Sorry for repeating your question!

Its absolutely no dumb question and is entirly justified. In general source release of DNN is broken in my opinion (I am a leader of other OSS projects on sourceforge and can assure you that in 99,9% of cases the source files are in source packages except DNN) and this should be fixed as soon as possible to meet OSS standards of sourceforge.net and DNN licence requirements.

Where can I find the code behind files of modules in DNN source packages??? There are no source files there!!!!

Please be so kind and provide link to the other thread giving an answer to this and please be more specific in describing solution:

1) From which page should I download 3.1.1 source code
2) version 3.1.1 which should I download is a version of module with name ... ? Or perhaps it would be easier to provide file name?
3) Which file should be renamed?
4) What should I do after renaming it?

After all either DNN is open source or is a hidden source project.

Cheers to all seeking source code in open source project ;)

Actually all the source is there in the source package. It will be in a .resources file ie. in the announcements folder you'll find announcements.resources. This is merely a zip file with a different extension, you can either rename it to .zip and uncompress it manually, or else during installation we do that for you. There are a number of reasons for this:

  • it's in a zip file so we can preserve directory layouts, so users can recompile without issue
  • it uses a .resources extension, so files can't be downloaded directly (the .resources extension is a .net extension mapped to 404.dll to prevent downloads)- if you use the DNN user interface to package your own modules it will treat them the same way, thus helping to protect your copyright/intellectual property
  • users complained about file sizes, so we're trying to minimise the size of the package - whilst many people have broadband or better connections, we have large numbers of users who rely on dialup connections and appreciate any savings they can make in bandwidth/download.
