We're new to DNN. Started working on our own skin and tried installing it on the server via the Host Extensions interface. After loading, going to Extensions now brings up "A critical error has occurred. Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

We then deleted the folder the skin was in, but the error is still showing. The Event Viewer shows this:

How do I get the Extensions page to work again? How do I back out a bad skin package when we make a mistake like this again?

Thanks in advance!

Barry,
I haven't seen this before. Any chance you could send me the skin and I can try to diagnose what is causing it? One option to get back to the extensions page would possibly be to restart the application pool in IIS in case that was part of the issue.

If that doesn't work you'll likely need to make some database changes to get the package removed.

in addition to Chris' advice, you may try removing skin folder from /portals/_default/skins (or /portals/=/skins), if it contains offending code.

Thanks, Chris. I'm actually not worried about getting this skin working at this point - it was our first attempt, and we likely tried cutting some corners. We have moved on and have a skin installed via the admin account on the portal (rather than the host), and it is working fine.

I tried restarting the application from within the application itself. Is that different than doing it from IIS?

I'll start looking into the database entries.

Just a note... I use the SQL module to delete the row related to this skin from the Packages table, and it appears to have worked. I can now access the Extensions module again.

And our second attempt at building a skin is working much better. :)
