We have a site that has been runing for several years (we are running version 04.05.03).  All of a sudden I can no longer log in using IE, but it does let me log in using FireFox.  I have tracked the problem down to a cookie issue.

IE is blocking the login because I originally hit the site using our DNS name in the URL but the login page is showing that the IP address is used instead of the DNS name, and so the cookies are blocked.  I could of course tell all my users to add the IP address to the trusted sites but many of them would have no clue how to do that.

The IP address is in the PortalAlias table and I tried assigning the IP address to a different portal (there are 2) and swapping the position of both entries for Portal 0.  But none of that helped.

The only thing that changed is that we had to restore a week old Db update right before these problems started happening.  But I cannot see how that would cause this issue.

HELP!  Most of our users use IE and can no longer access the site.

this sounds very strange, if you remove IP from the portal alias table it should work as expected - unless you are using SSL to secure the login page and SSL is bound to IP only in IIS web site settings. Anyways, for security reasons I strongly suggest upgrading at least to DNN 4.9.5.

Thanks, but that only seemed to generate an infinite redirect problem.  IE just spins and Chrome gives me an error about too a redirect loop.  I had to insert the IP address back.

I also tried deleting the second entry for this Portal from PortalAlias and changing the one w/the IP address to be my DNS name.  Still did not work.

WHY IS IT USING THE IP ADDRESS AND NOT THE DNS NAME?!?!?!?!??!?!     This is driving me NUTS!

Vance, I'm not sure this is your issue but I've noticed that the order that you entered your portal alias' can create some issues. In many cases I've found that the FIRST alias is used by modules as "the alias". Again, not sure about the login but since portal aliases sorts in natural order the first one entered (in this case your IP address) might be the one the module is using.

I've taken to entering in the final primary domain name when setting up new portals first...then entering in my "working" address for development.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I think I have tried every conceivable Portal Alias combination.  I have deleted the IP address, deleted the named entry and replaced the IP address with the name, tried to set both to the name (won't allow that because of Db constraints), and probably other combos.  Each time followed by a IISRESET.  However, I still seem to get the same results.
