I recently posted a peculiar issue regarding HTML editor displaying different content when logged in and in view or edit modes - that issue has been resolved and had to do with a client company's endeavor to upgrade their DNN 4.5.3 site to the latest DNN 5.6.2 version.  There is however, one last issue to overcome before the now upgraded site can be deployed to the live production server - on just one page, the left-side vertical menu items are not showing (the site uses both top horizontal tab menus [for parent pages] and a left-side menu [for child pages]).

Even though I can open the site in Visual Studio, I cannot set a breakpoint and debug the menu component as it is a DLL, namely the Snapsis CSS Menu DLL.  Looking at the ASCX page, the component does expose public properties to control caching or even what hierarchy depth the menu should display, etc.  But, none of the settings were changed during the upgrade process, and I confirmed the settings are set NOT to cache AND to display the proper menu levels.  The point being somewhat mute since the menus do work for the entire site except for the one page.

Here are some factors to consider:

  • Site upgraded from 4.5.3 to 5.6.2 following DNN's recommended upgrade path (no blocking issues)
  • Host security requirements require site to connect to its database via a gateway server as the DB is behind a firewall
  • IIS version is IIS 7
  • I cannot repro issue running the site on my local DEV machine
  • Only one page is affected (menus work otherwise)
  • Snapsis CSS Menu was not upgraded during upgrade process
  • The DNN checkbox for the menu to display the child pages on the menu ARE checked

Although there are many posts about menus not showing, I found maybe 2 that somewhat matches our issue:

I'm not sure where to go from here - add a new replacement parent page, and then re-assigned the child pages to point to that?  Is this somehow a caching problem?  I would be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions.  This is truly a puzzling and frustrating issue!

My first guess would be that there is some kind of css issue on that page.
A few questions may help narrow it down.
Does that page use a different skin?
Are both the top and the left menu created using the Snapsis Menu?
If so, is the top one still working correctly on that page?

Your idea about creating a new page at the top level and assigning one of the pages from the lower levels that is not showing up wouldn't hurt as a test.

BTW, you can get support for Snapsis CSS Menu over at Snapsis.com.

Hi John - I considered the CSS also, however it only comes into play when the HTML for the menu gets rendered - when viewing the HTML source for the page, it is not being rendered therefore there are no elements for the CSS to affect.  I examined the site CSS tracking what style definitions affect the menu, but there is nothing to affected its visibility or display (just a little padding, etc.).

  • The entire site is using a custom skin developed some time ago by another development firm
  • Both the top and side left menu are created by the Snapsis component
  • As stated, all the menus (top and side) are working for entire site except for that one particular page

Thanks for pointing me to Snapsis, if it comes to it I can try support from them

Regards...
