I'm in the process of converting my Classic ASP site to DNN.  Looked at most of the popular CMS and decided to go with DNN even though my hosting co. (Web Wiz) advised otherwise saying that it was buggy.  I'm running a local copy and the development version in parallel [testing as I go] . Is hosted as a sub domain of the classic asp site.  The classics site flys but I'm getting very frustrated with the DNN.  Takes forever to update, add text anything to the point I wouldn't dare take the site live.  My members would desert me.

Both sites are on the same server and DB.  One thing I notice is that in the Host Setting is a checkbox "Is Web Farm", however I can't click it on.  Thinking that this may be a cause of the slow loading time and I'm talking minutes (3-6) and even "The Server has been Reset."  Contacted the host today and asked why asp was fast as and DNN soooooooooooo slow.  Response was that it didn't surprise him as DNN is a resource hogg.  Over 95% of sites hosted on Web Wiz are asp.net.

Any help to get this sorted please.

Merv,
I love it when hosts point to the app. Of course, now as an app guy I'll point to the host. We run and manage about five production DNN instances (all community). On two I run between 50 - 60 portals each. They are on co-located servers but noting fancy or special (appliance Dells). The DB and IIS are on the same box in all cases.

We get page loads in .02 - 1.0 second timeframes (depending on the content loaded) and see thousands of views per months per portal.

Without knowing the details of your host setup, generally speaking the less expensive, shared hosting plans don't allocate enough memory to SQL and DNN. If they are running other "stuff" like Plesk, control panels, etc....it's worse.

DNN is a stable, mature asp.net platform and runs well in production but does require a host who understands it. I would recommend looking at some of those advertised here on dnn.com. Just ask some questions and get some examples....then perhaps advise you current host or move.

Thanks to Chris (from the duplicated thread) your links have got me looking in the right direction.

Steve, I had always believed that to be the case and I that you are correct in that they don't understand it, however they are prepared to work with me here to get a better understanding. Have just been to Google's Page Speed Lab and have a bench score of 55 out of 100. We'll see how we improve with tweaks at both ends.

Just a quick comment on any HOST that says "insert name of product here" is a resource hog - move now and avoid future grief.

Web hosting is a pretty cut throat business these days - and at the bottom end of the market place - there are all sorts of tricks being used buy hosting companies to cut costs - the most common issue that causes problems for complex systems like DNN is where hosts limit cpu or memory usage per application to such low limits that they are actually forcing DNN to restart its application core every single page request.

If you want reliable DNN hosting - I would strongly suggest moving to a host that optimizes its servers and platforms for that product.  www.powerdnn.com and www.ddn4life.com both have good reputations in this community.
