There is an option for an extension icon (32x32px) to be included in the .dnn manifest, e.g. <iconFile>Iconfile.png</iconFile>.

For Events, I am testing on using this. I find it strange that I have to specify it with a complete relative foldername to the site root, e.g. <iconFile>DesktopModules\Events\DNN_Events.png</iconFile>.

I would expect that 'DesktopModules' a well as the default foldername of the module (i.c. 'Events') wouldn't have to be specified and that <iconFile>DNN_Events.png</iconFile> would be enough if the icon is in the root of the module folder.

The icon spec is now inherently related to the DNN folder structure which seems wrong.

There was a bug that was logged, and Charles fixed, around this. Post the initial beta build, you are able to set this like <iconFile>~/DesktopModules/MyFolder/images/MyImage.png</iconFile>.

I believe ~/ is optional.

~/DesktopModules/MyFolder/images/MyImage.png

OR

DesktopModules/MyFolder/images/MyImage.png

will work.

In order for <iconFile>Iconfile.png</iconFile> to work, one would need to have components/component/files/basepath defined. In which case Iconfile.png is assumed to be present at the root of the basepath, which is generally DesktopModules\MyModule.

IMO having to mention the base path of the module somewhere to display the icon is not logical: The DNN structure defines most of the base path, not the module. Compare this: for a module install I do not have to specifiy the base path of the module, only the foldername of the module (within that path). That folder will be within the DesktopModules folder. DesktopModules is defined by the DNN structure, not by the module.
I hope this is considered as a bug (as Chris mentioned) and is fixed.
