please note we are going to be taking a good luck at performanace in the next few releases, which just continues from our existing performance work i.e. first we optimised the database/sprocs, then we optimised localization (approx 20% of time on a page is localization related) and now we're looking at client optimisation i.e. minification (some has already occured), script concatentation (to reduce requests) and a number of other areas.

Also, items such as the control panel are important, but much less so that what happens for anonymous access which is the predominant use case for most sites - so we'll be concentrating on that.

Finally, you can replace the actions menu- the 6.0 version simply replaces the core actionmenu, if you use an alternative menu such as http://dnnmoduleactions.codeplex.com/ that will work as expected.

Hi Cathal,
I'm very interested in that statement as I've been told otherwise by Chris and also found that my own action menu was replaced by DNN6 when I did a trial upgrade.

I was led to believe that the new action menu finds and replaces any existing action menu, but if there is a way to stop this then I'm very keen to know as it would save me a ton of dramas and work.

Are you quite sure this is the case?
Thanks for any further info on this.

Rob,
thank you for your honest feedback; it looks like some work and attention is needed on 6 before it performs not worse than 5.5.1+
After quite some efforts and tweaking, including the use of .net 4, I manage to stay above page speed 80 in most cases and I would be scared of dropping below 60, for instance, just because of the upgrade..

Cathal,
I appreciate what you are saying: I encourage all the developers, including module developers, to pay more attention to the performance aspects and bug fixes than new functionality for a while, at least that's my point of view.
Besides, it would be nice to have a consistent benchmark to rate the various releases under the same conditions, not least because what you can measure you can improve ;-)

Rob,
are you trying on the current 6.0 release - i know one of the betas replaced all but I was pretty sure that was changed - if you can confirm you saw it on 6.0 release version I'll ask the UX guys

Hi Cathal,
I've checked again now. The version I tested was the last or second to last before 6 went gold, and that release replaced the action menu automatically.

I tested because I'd just read Joe's post on the new UI and it had this ominous line in it: "In DotNetNuke 6 we have deprecated the use of the module action menu control. Any action menu that exists will be suppressed and a standard menu using the new mega-menu styling will be injected."

However, now I've also checked a fresh install of the release version and as you have suggested, it does not replace the action menu... what a relief!.. and thanks for mentioning it!

I can now plan on an upgrade to DNN6 at some point in future.. good news.
Regards
Rob
