I did a quick gotomeetin with John and the issue was tracked down to windows permissions - his company are using windows 2008r2 and Microsoft made a change in the user that a site runs under that's not very obvious. I blogged about this at http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Blogs/EntryId/2420/Windows-7-Windows-2008-R2-cross-application-pool-isolation.aspx for anyone else experiencing windows7/2008r2 issues.

Dean, that doesn't look right (the master.dbf is the master database and not a user database) - if you're using instances the path will be defined in the connection string e.g. open web.config and look at the attachdbfilename attribute e.g. AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf means the database is in app_data and is called database.mdf

oh, and related to the permissions issue - if you're ever in doubt the readme.txt file in the documentation folder lists the permissions for each Microsoft OS version.

Hi Cathal,

I tried to add the IIS AppPool\DefaultAppPool and it can not find the account.  I've selected the server and made sure all Object Types were selected and it can't find it.

Found this tidbit that will get it into the directory security so that you can manage via the GUI.

icacls {web site directory} /grant "IIS APPPOOL\DefaultAppPool":(OI)(CI)(RX)

Dean, it doesnt exist in the list of users (its a virtual user) -you have to type the name and then click check names -if it then converts over to "defaultapppool" then it's found it - frankly most people simple change the application pool to use networkidentify (under advanced settings of the application pool) as that's a "real" account so easier to grant it modify permissions.
