Hi all,

I spent some time looking for the answer to this one, but can't seem to find a solution.

I'd like to be able to have some very easy to remember urls that redirect to deeper URLs within the site... e.g.

http://www.mysite.com/events

would redirect based on a 'page not found' errorhandler that does a database lookup to:

http://www.mysite.com/Content/events2006/tabid/87/Default.aspx

TIA for any help.

Jason

There are several ways of tackling this, but at the moment, there is nothing in DotNetNuke that allows for the management of customized friendly URLS, which, would possibly be a nice feature to see. Maybe 3.3/4.1 will have it. I could see how such an ability could lead to nightmares though. I do not endorse it... yet.

The quick and dirty way of doing it is to intercept the call to the 404 error file in the IIS Web Site's config. Whenever a call is made for a file that doesn't exist or a link that's not found, the server fetches the file to be displayed when a 404 error is generated.

You then make a new file, that has code for the functionality you desire, and reconfigure the Web Site's handling of the 404 error to point to this new file.

The problem then reduces to a simple exercise in redirection once the new destination has been identified.

Hope this helps. You can check out my blog for how I handled the redirection aspect of the process.

Thanks Casey,

I finally got around to testing this...I have this implemented on an asp site I developed some time back.

I copied the file and set it up as the error file, however...

when I hit an error page, it doesn't run the asp, it renders the file as text showing the code for all to see.

I assume this is a config setting on the website, but I can't find it. I don't speak ASP.NET yet so I'm out of my element. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Jason
