I have a client with a DNN 4.9.5 site that they have been managing for a couple years. Now they need some changes that I need to make. I am trying to determine if I want to pursue a DNN upgrade to the 5.6.3 version.

It is a pretty high trafficked university site with a few hundred pages but they don't seem to have much funding for support. So I don't want to get into an upgrade that might get out of control. With that said, DNN 6 is definitely out of the question.

It has these modules and more.

Quite a number of XMod modules including the XMod Calendar add-on
Heavily customized CISS.Sidemenu
Live Content for Video and Photo Galleries
Sitewide Announcements

My question is if anyone with a good memory might know of any potential pitfalls in going from DNN 4.9.5 to 5.6.3. I know no one can really predict what will happen but I figured it is worth asking to see if any big flags come to mind. I don't recall any big breaking changes during that time like we saw from 2.2 to 3.0, but I am getting old and my memory isn't what it once was.

Thanks for any thoughts you have on this.

This wiki has a list of the suggested upgrade steps:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W...

I would follow this path - making sure that your server has firstly got all the correct asp.net upgrades and service packs to bring it up to asp.net 3.5 sp1  level - and that your ms sql server has all the latest service packs if it is 2005 then MS SQL sp 4 and if its 2008 then MS SQL sp 2.

At each upgrade point - in addition to upgrading the CORE - you will need to make sure that you manually upgrade any MODULES that have newer versions - modules are NOT automatically upgraded.

The same would go for your 3rd party modules - obtain a copy of the latest 5.6.3 compatible versions of each module.  There have been a large number of core changes since 4.9.x = and while the api for the most part is backward compatible - if a module developer has made direct calls to databases by passing the api - (something which maybe happens more than it should) then such a module will possibly have issues after an upgrade.

Many of the pitfalls that do occur around the 5.4.4 to 5.5.1 area - related to changes in minimum platform specs if I recalled correctly.
So making sure the server is all up to date and patched ,   For example as of 5.2.x DNN no longer supports or works with MS SQL 2000
