I have a DNN 5.6.3 site that has > 56K users.  Growing 300 daily.  We will upgrade this site to 6.x within 60 days.

I am thinking about installing the ActiveForums (later active Social) module in a separate DNN 6.0.1 instance on the same server.  I would copy all users in the DNN 5 version to the DNN 6 version, but, then I need to keep the User Accts synchronized between DNN instances.  The purpose behind this is to isolate the "Social Community" on the DNN 6 version from the product marketing website (5 version).  We want to allow users broad access to content creation and interactivity in the community site, but, not put our mission critical marketing site at risk from malicious activity.  Is this practical?

Would the Live and Open authentication providers be of value here?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

In my experience if you want to sync users between two instances of DotNetNuke you'll want a SQL DB to write a migration script to copy the new users to the other instance.

The tables you'll need to worry about are

[aspnet_Users]
[aspnet_Membership]
[Users]

Depends on your requirements you may also want
[UserProfile]
[UserRoles]

You can create this as a daily batch script or run it instantly off a trigger to keep them as up to date as possible.
