Hi,

I'm just getting started with DNN and like others am a bit confused by the localization functionality.  So, I set up a series of steps to see what was supposed to happen.  I thought I understood, but now I'm confused.  I'm writing the steps down just so that other newbies don't have to go through all the research that it took to figure out these simple steps, but I'm probably missing some step in the middle and maybe someone can point me in the right direction.  Or possibly, I don't understand the intended behavior.  But, I think its a bug.

Starting with a fresh install of DNN 6.1 with the default website populated with Getting Started, Home, About Us, Our Services, News...

- Log in to site as host
- Click Host -> Settings -> Other Settings -> Enable Content Localization
- Click Admin -> Languages -> Add New Language
- Add Spanish, French, and Dutch to the default which is English
- Verify all are enabled
- Click Admin -> Languages -> Enable Localized Content
- Answer yes to the warning
- Chug, chug, chug as existing pages duplicate
- Verify the default language is selected (English in my case)
- Add new Page under About Us with Page Name set to "1. Create Localized Versions of Page"
- Check to make sure the Create Localized Versions of Page is checked in the Localization Tab
- Click Add Page
- Add new Page under About Us with Page Name set to "2. Create In Current Culture Only"
- Check to make sure the Create In Current Culture Only is checked in the Localization Tab
- Click Add Page
- Add new Page under About Us with Page Name set to "3. Create Single Neutral Culture Page"
- Check to make sure the Create Single Neutral Culture Page is checked in the Localization Tab
- Click Add Page
- Now comes the confusion.  The Page_1 created above with "Create Localized Versions of Page" works as expected.  I expect that it has been duplicated to my three additional languages, and as I switch languages by clicking on the flags, I see it in the menu with the selected culture tags, and I can muck with the HTML module that got duplicated along with it. Cool.
- However, when I click on the Spanish flag and look at the menu I get a bit concerned.  I see Page_1 in the menu under About Us, but I don't see either of the other pages.  I, of course, don't expect to see Page_2.  It was created in the current culture only and shouldn't be in Spanish.  But, Page_3 is missing from the menu and I would think that if I created a Culture Neutral page, it should appear under any culture.  Not there...hmmm...
- I click back to English and click on Page_2 (Created as Current Culture Only).  It comes up as expected, but I still have the various flags to choose from even though they don't work (i.e. they probably should be grayed out or have a popup when clicked that says the page isn't available in the requested language).  This is a nuisance but not a show stopper for sure.
- Still in English, I click on on Page_3 (Created as SIngle Neutral Culture).  Now from Page_3 when I click on the Spanish flag, the menu changes to the Spanish culture, but I remain on the page that I selected from the English menu.  So, I am now on a page in the Spanish version of my site for which there is no entry in the Spanish version of the menu system.
- What I would expect is for any page created with the Create as Single Neutral Culture, should appear no matter what in all menus of all languages...never copied...never translated...but always available.

So, is this a bug, a setting that I'm missing, or a point that I'm missing?

to me, it sounds like a bug, unless there are page settings, allowing you to make the page available in other languages as well. But I have to admit that the implementation is too complicate for me to understand (besides other limitations) and I prefer 3rd party solutions.

Thanks for the reply.

The problem with 3rd party solutions is that they appear weakly supported and DNN is now making an attempt at putting localization the core functionality.  If I go with a 3rd party solution who abandon their products because there is no competing with core functionality, then I'm really hosed having to re-architect a whole site. It seems like localization is one of the biggies that a CMS must have and I'm disappointed that DNN doesn't take it more seriously.  Its actually the main reason I'm going for a CMS (although there are others).
